Bird's-eye view

ON our last morning in the Flinders Ranges we took to the air to do a scenic flight-seeing tour across the landscape we've been exploring for the past few days.

We did a wide loop around the Wilpena Pound, gazing at the Chase and Elder ranges in the distance, and then followed the long line of the Heysen and ABC ranges that looked like the skeletal vertebrae of some giant pre-historic beast resting on the parched ground.

From above it was easy to appreciate just how dramatic this chain of hills is, with kilometres of flat land on both side and then thin line of steep peaks stretching like a crocodile's tail.
